eBay Seller Fees Explained: What eBay Actually Takes

SellersNest·

eBay seller calculating final value fees and net sale proceeds

Most eBay sellers pay a final value fee of about 13.6 percent of the total sale plus a per-order charge of 30 to 40 cents. Across categories the rate ranges from roughly 6.7 to 15.3 percent, and it applies to shipping and tax as well as the item.

The final value fee applies to more than you think

This is the single most common miscalculation. eBay's final value fee is charged on the total amount of the sale, which means item price plus the shipping the buyer pays plus applicable tax. Sellers who treat shipping as a cost that passes straight through to the carrier consistently underestimate their fees.

Category matters too. Rates vary considerably, so a figure that fits a clothing seller may be wrong for someone selling trading cards or car parts. Check your own category and put the real number into the eBay Fee Calculator, where the rate is an editable field.

Listing fees

You get 250 free listings a month as a standard seller. Beyond that, insertion fees of around $0.35 per listing apply. If you list more than about 15 items a month, a Basic Store subscription usually pays for itself through a higher free listing allowance and reduced final value rates.

The costs that are easy to miss

  • Per-order fee. Small on a $200 sale, painful on a $6 one.
  • Promoted Listings. An ad rate on top of everything else, and increasingly hard to avoid if you want visibility.
  • International fees when selling across borders.
  • Below-standard penalties if your seller rating slips. Top Rated Plus status protects you from some of these.

A worked example

A $40 item with $8 shipping is a $48 sale. At 13.6 percent that is $6.53, plus $0.35 per order, so around $6.88 to eBay. If the item cost you $18 and postage costs $7, your profit is about $16.12, a margin of roughly 34 percent on the total.

Change one number and the picture shifts fast, which is the argument for running it before you list rather than after you are paid.

Three habits of sellers who stay profitable

They calculate fees before listing, not after. They match their store subscription to their actual volume instead of guessing. And they protect their seller rating, because penalty fees are entirely avoidable and pure loss.

If you sell on more than one platform, it is worth knowing where a given product performs best after fees. We compared them in Etsy versus eBay versus Shopify.

Frequently asked

How much does eBay take in total? For most US sellers without a store, expect 12 to 16 percent of the sale once the final value fee and per-order charge are combined.

Is the fee charged on sales tax? The final value fee is calculated on the total amount of the sale, which includes applicable tax.

Can I lower my fees? Yes. A store subscription reduces the rate at volume, and maintaining Top Rated status avoids penalties. Both are worth modelling before you commit.
