What is dimensional weight?
Carriers charge for the space a parcel takes up, not just its weight. Multiply length by width by height, divide by the carrier's DIM divisor, and if that number beats actual weight, it becomes the weight you pay for.
What DIM divisor should I use?
Common US retail divisors are 139 for UPS and FedEx ground, and 166 for some USPS services. Your contracted rate may differ, so check your carrier agreement and change the divisor above.
How do I lower dimensional weight?
Use the smallest box that protects the item, switch bulky void fill for thinner protective material, and consider poly mailers for soft goods. The last row shows exactly what oversized packaging is costing you.
