What counts as a fixed cost?
Anything you pay whether or not you sell: shop subscriptions, software, rent, insurance. Costs that scale with each sale, such as materials, shipping and marketplace fees, are variable costs instead.
Why does a small price rise cut the break-even number so much?
Because break-even divides fixed costs by contribution per unit. If your contribution is $5 and you raise price by $1, contribution jumps 20% and the units you need fall by roughly the same share.
Should marketplace fees go in variable cost?
Yes. Fees rise with every sale, so include them along with materials and shipping. Use one of the fee calculators on this site to get an accurate per-unit number first.
