Shop Pay Installments for BFCM 2026: Will BNPL Increase Profit?

SellersNest Editorial·

Online seller comparing installment payment costs for a holiday ecommerce campaign

Shop Pay Installments is worth offering during BFCM only when the extra completed orders or larger baskets produce more contribution profit than the higher payment fee removes. Do not judge it from revenue or average order value alone. Compare the same cart with your normal Shopify Payments rate and your actual Shop Pay Installments rate, then measure conversion, profit and returns separately.

The timing is relevant in 2026. Adobe’s September 28 holiday forecast expects buy now, pay later (BNPL) to drive $21.3 billion of U.S. online spending from November through December, up 6.6% year over year. Adobe forecasts $1.09 billion of BNPL spending on Cyber Monday and $807 million on Black Friday. Those figures show market demand for flexible payments; they do not guarantee better results for an individual Shopify store.

This guide explains the current Shop Pay Installments rules, the merchant fee test and a safe BFCM measurement plan. Use the free Shopify Fee Calculator twice—once with your standard processing rate and once with the installment rate shown in your Shopify admin—to see the difference per order.

How Shop Pay Installments works for merchants

Shop Pay Installments lets an eligible customer split an eligible purchase into installment payments at checkout. The customer deals with the financing provider, while the merchant receives the captured order amount through Shopify Payments, less the applicable fee.

Shopify’s current merchant payout guidance says sellers receive full payment within one to three business days after capture, excluding the Shop Pay Installments fee. It also states that Affirm collects from the customer, so the merchant does not carry the risk that the customer stops making installment payments.

That removes customer repayment risk, but it does not remove product, fulfilment, refund, return, fraud or margin risk. A seller still needs to decide whether the higher fee produces enough extra profitable demand.

Current eligibility and order limits

As of October 8, 2026, Shopify’s Shop Pay Installments help page says the feature is available to eligible online stores with Shopify Payments and Shop Pay activated in:

  • United States: business entity in the U.S., selling in USD.
  • Canada: business entity in Canada, selling in CAD.
  • United Kingdom: business entity in the U.K., selling in GBP.

Shopify lists eligible online-order totals of $35 to $30,000 USD in the United States, $35 to $30,000 CAD in Canada and £50 to £30,000 GBP in the United Kingdom. These totals include discounts, shipping and taxes. Store and customer eligibility still apply, and available payment plans depend on location, order value and approval.

Do not copy these limits into permanent store copy without a date or verification step. Eligibility, financing options and regional availability can change. Check Settings → Payments in Shopify before launching a campaign.

The fee detail sellers must verify

Shopify says there is no separate activation cost, but a Shop Pay Installments order carries a higher transaction fee that includes the standard Shopify Payments processing fee. Shopify does not show one universal public rate on its help page because merchant offers and packages can differ.

Use the exact rate visible in your own Shopify admin or contract. Do not use a percentage copied from a forum, another store or an old screenshot. For a clean comparison, record:

  • Standard Shopify Payments percentage and fixed fee
  • Shop Pay Installments percentage and fixed fee, if any
  • Whether the displayed rate already includes the normal card-processing component
  • Applicable country, currency and financing package

The Shopify fees guide explains the difference between subscription, payment-processing and third-party gateway costs.

Calculate the extra BNPL cost per order

If both payment methods use the same order total, calculate the fee difference:

Extra BNPL fee = BNPL processing fee − standard processing fee

For percentage-plus-fixed pricing:

Processing fee = order total × percentage rate + fixed fee

Suppose a $150 discounted order would cost $4.65 at a 2.9% + $0.30 standard rate. If the merchant’s actual installment rate produced a $9.15 fee, the extra cost would be:

$9.15 − $4.65 = $4.50 per installment order

This is an illustrative comparison, not a published Shopify rate. Replace both fee figures with the rates shown for your store.

Measure contribution profit, not revenue

A higher average order value can still produce less profit if a discount, shipping subsidy and installment fee rise together.

Contribution profit = net sale − product cost − fulfilment − shipping support − payment fee − ad cost − expected return cost

For the same $150 order, assume:

  • Product cost: $60
  • Pick, pack and packaging: $6
  • Seller-funded shipping: $10
  • Allocated advertising cost: $18
  • Expected return cost: $5
  • Shop Pay Installments fee: $9.15

The contribution profit is:

$150 − $60 − $6 − $10 − $18 − $5 − $9.15 = $41.85

With the illustrative standard fee of $4.65, the same order would contribute $46.35. The installment option therefore needs to create at least $4.50 of incremental value through conversion, basket size or customer acquisition to match the card-order economics.

Run both versions through the Shopify Fee Calculator. Enter the final order total after discounts, product cost, your shipping cost, percentage rate and fixed fee.

Calculate the break-even lift

A simple test asks how many additional installment orders are needed to cover their extra fees.

Break-even extra orders = total extra BNPL fees ÷ contribution profit per additional BNPL order

Suppose 100 existing customers use installments and the extra fee is $4.50 each. The added fee cost is $450. If a genuinely additional BNPL order contributes $41.85, the store needs:

$450 ÷ $41.85 = 10.8

Round up to 11 additional profitable orders. This means the payment option must generate roughly 11 sales that would not otherwise have happened just to cover the higher fees on the first 100 orders.

This calculation is deliberately conservative. Some installment customers may also increase their basket size, but some would have purchased by card anyway. Do not count every BNPL order as incremental.

When Shop Pay Installments is more likely to help

  • Your products have a considered or higher order value.
  • Customers frequently abandon at the payment stage rather than earlier in the journey.
  • Margins can absorb the higher fee after the BFCM discount.
  • Bundles raise profit dollars as well as order value.
  • You can explain the option accurately without promising customer approval or universal interest-free terms.
  • Your mobile checkout is fast and product pages answer delivery, sizing and return questions.

Adobe expects 82% of 2026 holiday BNPL spending to occur on mobile devices. Treat that as a market-level forecast and test your own store: product details, variant selection, discount messaging and checkout must all work clearly on a phone.

When the higher fee can damage profit

  • A deep product discount already puts the order near its margin floor.
  • Free shipping, discount codes and automatic offers can stack into the same checkout.
  • The product has a high return or exchange cost.
  • Most customers already convert without installment messaging.
  • Your average basket sits below the eligible order threshold.
  • You compare revenue before refunds rather than settled contribution profit.

Before launch, use the Shopify discount-stacking checklist to test the lowest-margin cart. The Black Friday discount guide helps set the price floor before payment fees are added.

A practical BFCM test plan

Record a pre-promotion baseline, then compare like-for-like periods and traffic sources. Track at least:

MetricWhy it matters
Checkout conversion rateShows whether more checkout sessions become completed orders
BNPL share of ordersShows adoption, not whether those orders were incremental
Average order valueReveals whether installment baskets are larger
Contribution profit per orderCaptures product, fulfilment, shipping, ad and payment costs
Return and refund rateChecks whether gross sales survive after the return window
Contribution profit per 100 checkout sessionsCombines conversion and order economics into one useful comparison

Segment results by device, campaign and new-versus-returning customer where the sample is large enough. The average order value guide explains why a bigger basket should not be mistaken for better profit, while the return-rate guide helps measure what comes back.

Pre-launch checklist

  • Confirm store eligibility and supported currency in Shopify admin.
  • Record the exact Shop Pay Installments fee offered to your store.
  • Compare standard and installment fees on three realistic BFCM carts.
  • Include product, fulfilment, shipping, ad and expected return costs.
  • Test all active discount combinations.
  • Check installment messaging and checkout on mobile.
  • Avoid claims that every customer qualifies or every plan is interest-free.
  • Define the conversion, profit and return metrics you will review.
  • Keep the option only if settled contribution profit improves.

Frequently asked questions

Does the merchant receive the full order amount upfront?

Shopify says the merchant receives the captured order amount through Shopify Payments within one to three business days, less the Shop Pay Installments fee. Affirm handles customer repayments.

What does Shop Pay Installments cost a merchant?

There is no separate activation cost, but installment orders have a higher transaction fee that includes standard Shopify Payments processing. The exact rate can vary, so use the figure shown in your Shopify admin.

Is Shop Pay Installments available in every country?

No. As of October 8, 2026, Shopify lists eligible online stores in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, subject to business, currency and account requirements.

Will BNPL always increase conversion?

No. It adds payment flexibility, but results depend on product price, customer demand, checkout friction, trust, mobile experience and traffic quality. Measure contribution profit per checkout session rather than assuming an improvement.

Should I promote installments on every product?

Prioritize eligible products where the order value and margin can absorb the fee. Low-margin, high-return or below-threshold products may not benefit.

How should I compare BNPL with card payments?

Compare conversion, average order value, payment cost, contribution profit and return rate for similar products, devices and traffic sources. Allow enough time for refunds before declaring a winner.
