Before Black Friday, open every active Shopify discount and check its Combinations settings. A product discount, order discount and free-shipping offer can all reach the same cart when their rules allow it. The safe process is to map every possible combination, calculate the lowest-margin cart, and run a checkout test before the campaign starts.
In 2026, Black Friday falls on November 27 and Cyber Monday on November 30. Shopify published its current BFCM checklist on August 28, 2026 and reported that merchants generated $14.6 billion during BFCM 2025. That shows the scale of seasonal interest, not a sales guarantee for one store. Your controllable risk is whether overlapping promotions quietly discount an order more than planned.
Use the Discount & Sale Price Calculator to check each promotional price, then put the final discounted order into the Shopify Fee Calculator with your actual processing rate, product cost and shipping.
How Shopify discount stacking works
Shopify groups discounts into three classes:
- Product discounts reduce eligible products or collections.
- Order discounts reduce the qualifying order subtotal.
- Shipping discounts reduce an eligible shipping rate.
Shopify’s current discount-combination guidance says multiple discounts apply only when the combination setting on each discount permits the other class. If eligible discounts cannot combine, Shopify applies the best valid discount or combination for the customer.
The calculation order matters:
- Product discounts apply to individual items first.
- Order discounts apply to the revised subtotal.
- Shipping discounts apply last.
This means a 20% product discount followed by a 10% order discount is not necessarily 30% off the original cart. The order discount is calculated after the product reduction. However, Shopify says two percentage-based order discounts are each calculated on the original qualifying subtotal. If 10% and 20% order discounts combine on a $100 subtotal, the result is $70—30% off.
Which combinations can apply?
| Combination | Current Shopify behaviour | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Product + order | Can combine on eligible stores when both settings permit it | The order discount applies after the product reduction |
| Product + shipping | Supported when both discounts allow the combination | Margin loses both price and delivery contribution |
| Order + shipping | Supported when both discounts allow the combination | A threshold may be reached on an unexpectedly low-margin basket |
| Product + product on different items | Supported | Several promoted lines can enter one cart |
| Product + product on the same item | Shopify Plus only, with the required reciprocal tag setup | The same SKU can receive multiple product reductions |
| Shipping + shipping | Not supported | Only one shipping discount can apply per order |
Product-plus-order and multiple order-discount options can depend on checkout eligibility. Shopify says stores using these combinations must use Checkout Extensibility rather than checkout.liquid customizations, and incompatible apps can also affect availability. Test the settings shown in your own admin instead of assuming every store has identical options.
Know the current discount limits
As checked on October 5, 2026, Shopify lists these limits:
- Up to 25 active automatic discounts, including app-based automatic discounts.
- Up to five product or order discount codes per order.
- Up to one shipping discount code per order.
- Discount combinations are supported through the Online Store, Storefront API and Shopify POS, but not through external checkouts such as Facebook, Instagram or Google.
Those are platform ceilings, not targets. A simple BFCM promotion is easier to explain, test and reconcile than a web of codes near the maximum.
Worked example: when a 20% offer becomes more expensive
Assume a cart contains an $80 jacket and a $40 accessory. The store has:
- 20% off the jacket as a product discount;
- 10% off the order;
- free shipping that costs the merchant $8;
- $45 total product cost and $2 packaging;
- 2.9% + $0.30 payment processing for this example.
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Original merchandise subtotal | $80 + $40 | $120.00 |
| 20% product discount | $80 × 20% | −$16.00 |
| Revised subtotal | $120 − $16 | $104.00 |
| 10% order discount | $104 × 10% | −$10.40 |
| Merchandise revenue | $104 − $10.40 | $93.60 |
| Processing estimate | $93.60 × 2.9% + $0.30 | −$3.01 |
| Product, packaging and shipping | $45 + $2 + $8 | −$55.00 |
| Estimated order profit | $93.60 − $3.01 − $55 | $35.59 |
The customer did not receive a simple 30% reduction on the full cart, but the merchant still funded a product discount, an order discount and shipping. If the expected advertising cost were $20, contribution would fall to $15.59. Calculate the whole order—not each promotion in isolation.
Build a BFCM discount map
Create one row for every promotion that could be active from early Black Friday through Cyber Monday. Include:
- discount name and code;
- product, order or shipping class;
- automatic, code-based, app-based or manually applied;
- eligible products, collections, markets and customer segments;
- minimum quantity or spend;
- maximum uses and per-customer limits;
- start date, end date and time zone;
- classes it can combine with;
- owner responsible for switching it off.
Do not ignore welcome codes, loyalty rewards, creator codes, abandoned-checkout offers or app promotions just because they are not labelled “Black Friday.” They can be the second or third reduction that reaches the campaign cart.
Manual discounts on POS carts and draft orders, plus discounts created through the legacy Scripts API, can bypass ordinary combination settings according to Shopify’s current documentation. Include them in staff testing even if they do not appear in the normal online code path.
Calculate the worst-case cart
For each high-risk combination, build the cheapest qualifying basket with the weakest margin. Include:
- the lowest-margin eligible SKU;
- the largest permitted product or order discount;
- free or reduced shipping to an expensive eligible destination;
- payment fees using the actual Shopify plan and gateway—see the Shopify fees guide;
- affiliate, creator or app charges;
- packaging, pick-and-pack and expected return cost, using the holiday return policy guide to define the exposure;
- the product cost of any free gift.
Use this formula:
Order profit = discounted merchandise revenue + paid shipping − product cost − processing and transaction fees − seller-funded shipping − packaging − advertising and affiliate cost − expected returns
The earlier Black Friday discount strategy explains how to set the percentage from target profit. The free-shipping threshold formula helps stress-test the delivery side. This Shopify guide focuses on the checkout interaction between those offers.
Be careful with Buy X get Y promotions
Shopify’s Buy X get Y guidance says the customer must add the qualifying and reward products to the cart; Shopify does not automatically add the free item. You can set usage limits, customer eligibility, markets, combination classes and active dates.
Inventory is part of the promise. If the free product reaches zero inventory, Shopify says it displays as sold out and customers cannot use the promotion. Reserve enough reward stock, set a maximum number of uses per order and decide what happens when the gift is gone.
For stores outside Shopify Plus, items participating in Buy X get Y are generally ineligible for another product discount. Shopify Plus has additional same-line combination options. Test both the qualifying item and the reward item with every code likely to circulate during BFCM.
Test the real checkout before launch
Shopify recommends placing a test order or entering codes at checkout and stopping before payment. Test at least these carts:
- The intended Black Friday offer by itself.
- The BFCM offer plus a welcome or loyalty code.
- The BFCM offer plus free shipping.
- A mixed cart containing eligible and excluded products.
- A Buy X get Y cart at its use limit.
- A cart one cent below and one cent above every threshold.
- A low-stock reward item and the last available unit.
- Domestic, remote and international addresses allowed by the rules.
- Mobile and desktop checkout.
- Online Store, POS or other supported sales channels you will actually use.
Verify the displayed discount names, merchandise subtotal, shipping charge, tax, final payment, inventory movement and order receipt. Take screenshots and record the expected result so another team member can repeat the test.
Set dates, limits and ownership
Shopify’s current discount setup allows a start date and optional end date. If you do not set an end date, the discount does not expire. For a one-day promotion, Shopify says to select the same calendar date for the start and end.
For BFCM, record the store time zone beside every customer-facing start and finish time. Set total-use or one-per-customer limits where appropriate, especially for gifts, loss leaders and influencer codes. Assign one person to pause a code if profit, inventory or checkout behaviour moves outside the plan.
Monitor margin during Black Friday weekend
Shopify’s 2026 seasonal checklist recommends reviewing store analytics during and after BFCM. Add promotion-level checks that reveal stacking problems:
- discount amount per order;
- orders using two or more promotions;
- gross profit or contribution per order;
- free-shipping cost by destination;
- creator and affiliate commission;
- average order value after discounts;
- reward-item inventory remaining;
- refund and cancellation signals.
Revenue can rise while profit per order collapses. Pause the unsafe combination first, then investigate whether the discount settings, an app or an unexpected customer segment created it.
Shopify discount stacking FAQ
Can Shopify customers use more than one discount code?
Yes, when the discounts and the cart are eligible to combine. Shopify currently allows up to five product or order discount codes and one shipping discount code per order, but each discount’s combination settings still control whether it can stack.
Do Shopify discounts combine automatically?
No. Shopify says you must configure the combination settings for each discount. If eligible discounts cannot combine, the platform applies the best valid discount or combination for the customer.
In what order does Shopify apply discounts?
Product discounts apply first, order discounts apply to the revised subtotal, and shipping discounts apply last.
Can two percentage order discounts create a 30% discount?
Yes. Shopify’s current documentation says percentage-based order discounts are each calculated on the original qualifying order subtotal. A combinable 10% order discount and 20% order discount therefore reduce a $100 subtotal by $30.
Can two product discounts apply to the same item?
Shopify currently limits multiple product discounts on the same line item to Shopify Plus stores using the required tag configuration. A product discount and an order discount can still affect the same eligible item when their classes are configured to combine.
How many automatic discounts can be active?
Shopify currently permits up to 25 active automatic discounts, including app-based discounts. Keep the BFCM setup simpler than the platform maximum so it remains testable.
What happens if a Buy X get Y gift sells out?
Shopify says the reward product displays as sold out when inventory reaches zero, so customers cannot use the promotion. Reserve inventory and set use limits before advertising a guaranteed gift.
Bottom line
A Shopify BFCM promotion is safe only after the combined cart is profitable. Audit every active discount, model the worst eligible basket, test checkout with old and new codes, and watch contribution per order once the campaign starts. Make the interaction intentional before November 27 instead of discovering the stack in refunded orders.
