To earn Etsy’s Star Seller badge, a shop must meet three service targets over the current three-month review period: reply to 95% of first messages within 24 hours, ship 95% of qualifying physical orders on time with tracking when required, and maintain an average review rating of at least 4.8. The shop must also meet Etsy’s customer-service standards, be at least 90 days past its first sale, complete at least five orders, and reach the applicable sales minimum.
Etsy checks eligibility on the first day of each month. Your dashboard updates daily, so one late reply, shipment or low rating can change the percentage before the review period closes. Use the free Etsy Star Seller Calculator to enter your current counts and see which target needs attention.
Etsy Star Seller requirements at a glance
| Requirement | Current target | What is measured |
|---|---|---|
| Message response | 95% | First messages in a buyer thread answered within 24 hours |
| On-time shipping and tracking | 95% | Qualifying physical orders shipped by the stated date, with valid tracking or an Etsy label when required |
| Average review rating | 4.8 or higher | Average of reviews received during the review period |
| Order minimum | 5 completed orders | Received and fulfilled orders; canceled orders do not count |
| Sales minimum | $300 USD or local equivalent | Item sales excluding shipping and additional taxes |
| Shop age | 90 days after first sale | Time since the shop’s first Etsy sale |
For the sales minimum, Etsy currently lists $300 USD, £200 GBP, €250 EUR, $350 CAD or $350 AUD. Shops using other currencies are measured against the $300 USD equivalent. These thresholds and program rules can change, so treat your Customer service stats page as the final record for your shop.
How the three-month review period works
Star Seller is not a lifetime score. Etsy evaluates the last three months of activity before each monthly review. The current-period view in Customer service stats shows the activity that will determine the next badge; the previous-period view explains your current badge.
That rolling window matters. A miss does not remain forever, but it also does not disappear at the end of a calendar month unless it has aged out of the full review period. A shop can therefore improve without “resetting” its history, while a previously strong result can fall when older successful orders leave the window.
If you qualify, Etsy says the badge may take up to 24 hours to appear. Star Seller does not directly raise Etsy search ranking, and a shop is not penalized simply for missing the badge. It is a buyer-facing service signal—not a reason to make unprofitable promises or rush work before it is ready.
1. Message response rate: 95% within 24 hours
Etsy measures whether you answer the first message in a new thread within 24 hours. You do not have to answer every follow-up within 24 hours for this specific metric, although prompt communication is still good service. First-time buyer messages and new Help with Order requests are the conversations to prioritize.
The basic calculation is:
Response rate = first messages answered within 24 hours ÷ total first messages × 100
Suppose you received 20 new threads and replied to 18 within 24 hours. Your response rate is 18 ÷ 20 = 90%. If you then answer the next 20 qualifying first messages on time, the rate becomes 38 ÷ 40 = 95%.
This illustrates an important small-shop effect: with fewer than 20 new threads, one late response can put the percentage below 95%. Do not send unnecessary messages to manipulate the score. Instead:
- Turn on Etsy Seller app notifications for new messages and Help with Order requests.
- Use an auto-reply when you cannot answer personally; Etsy says qualifying auto-replies count.
- Create quick replies for sizing, customization, delivery and return questions.
- Mark genuine spam as spam so it is excluded from the response metric.
- Reply to open first messages before switching on Vacation Mode.
Messages received during the final two days of a review period may move to the next period so sellers retain a full 24-hour response window. Your dashboard remains the best source for which threads Etsy counted.
2. On-time shipping and tracking: 95%
For physical items, Etsy compares the shipment with the processing time and “ship by” date you promised. A qualifying order generally needs to be shipped on time and include valid tracking or a shipping label purchased on Etsy when required.
Shipping score = qualifying orders shipped on time with required tracking ÷ qualifying physical orders × 100
If 19 of 20 qualifying orders meet both conditions, the result is exactly 95%. At low order volumes, the margin for error is narrow. The safest approach is operational: set realistic processing times, prepare packaging before busy periods, and hand parcels to the carrier on the date entered as the ship date.
Do not mark an order shipped before it is actually handed off. That creates a misleading buyer notification and may affect delivery performance. Etsy also notes that tracking added after the shipping date may not repair the Star Seller metric.
Digital downloads are excluded from the on-time shipping calculation, although they can still count toward other Star Seller requirements. Tracking thresholds also vary by shop currency. Etsy’s current guidance says tracking or an Etsy label is required from £10 in GBP, €10 in EUR, and $15 in CAD or AUD; for other currencies, including USD, it is required for all qualifying orders.
Shipping several items together? Use the Etsy Multi-Item Shipping Calculator before setting an additional-item rate, and follow the workflow in our guide to Etsy combined shipping. Reliable dispatch should not require absorbing every label-cost surprise.
3. Average review rating: 4.8 or higher
The rating target is an average, not a requirement that every review be five stars. Add the stars from reviews received in the period and divide by the number of those reviews:
Average rating = total review stars ÷ number of reviews
For example, nine five-star reviews and one three-star review total 48 stars across 10 reviews, producing an average of 4.8. By contrast, eight five-star reviews, one four-star review and one three-star review total 47 stars, or 4.7.
To estimate how many future five-star reviews could lift an average to 4.8, use:
Additional five-star reviews needed = round up [current review count × (4.8 − current average) ÷ 0.2]
If you have 10 reviews averaging 4.7, the estimate is 10 × 0.1 ÷ 0.2 = 5 additional five-star reviews. This is only a planning estimate: you cannot control whether a buyer reviews, and older reviews can move out of the rolling window.
Focus on the experience rather than asking for a particular rating. Make product photos and descriptions accurate, state dimensions clearly, protect items in transit and resolve problems professionally. The Review Reply Generator can help you draft a calm public response, while our guide to product descriptions that sell can reduce expectation gaps before purchase.
How many good results do you need to recover?
A percentage below 95% can be recovered with additional successful events, but the number may be larger than it first appears because every new event also increases the denominator.
If you have 17 successful responses out of 19 first messages, your score is 89.5%. To solve for the additional on-time replies needed:
(17 + x) ÷ (19 + x) ≥ 0.95
The result is x ≥ 21. You would need 21 consecutive on-time first replies to reach 38 out of 40, or 95%. The same structure works for shipping:
Additional successes needed = round up [(0.95 × total events − successful events) ÷ 0.05]
Rather than doing this by hand, enter your totals in the Etsy Star Seller Calculator. It shows the gap for messages, shipping and ratings in one place.
A practical weekly Star Seller routine
- Monday: check the dashboard. Record message, shipping and rating figures, plus the review-period dates.
- Daily: clear first messages. Separate new threads from follow-ups and answer qualifying messages before the 24-hour deadline.
- Before accepting rush work: check capacity. Extend processing times before orders arrive if your schedule is already full.
- At dispatch: verify the order. Confirm the carrier, tracking number and real handoff date before completing it.
- Friday: inspect recurring friction. Turn repeated questions into clearer photos, FAQs, variations or description copy.
- Monthly: protect profit too. Run representative listings through the Etsy Fee Calculator and compare with our breakdown of how much Etsy takes per sale.
Common mistakes that cost the badge
- Replying in your head but not in Etsy Messages. The recorded first-thread response is what counts.
- Counting follow-ups instead of first messages. Ten quick follow-ups cannot offset one late initial response.
- Using optimistic processing times. A shorter promise is not better if you routinely miss it.
- Adding tracking after the deadline. Late tracking may not be recognized for the metric.
- Confusing the badge with search rank. Etsy states that Star Seller does not directly influence ranking.
- Chasing a badge at the expense of quality or margin. Sustainable service beats rushed production and loss-making shipping.
Frequently asked questions
When does Etsy calculate Star Seller?
Etsy reviews eligibility on the first day of each month using the previous three months of data. The badge can take up to 24 hours to display after a successful evaluation.
Can a new Etsy shop become a Star Seller?
Yes, but eligibility begins 90 days after the shop’s first sale. The shop must also meet the order, sales, service and policy requirements.
Do I need 95% in all three Star Seller metrics?
You need at least 95% for eligible first-message responses, 95% for qualifying on-time shipments with tracking when required, and a review average of 4.8 or higher. You must also satisfy the other eligibility conditions.
Does Star Seller improve Etsy SEO?
Not directly. Etsy says the badge does not directly affect search ranking. It may still help shoppers recognize a record of strong service.
What if I receive no messages during the review period?
Etsy says the response-rate metric is not counted when a shop receives no qualifying messages. The shop can still qualify based on the remaining criteria.
