Etsy Listing Renewal Fees: What Sellers Pay

Handmade product seller reviewing Etsy listing renewal costs and inventory

Etsy listing renewal fees are small one at a time, but they can become a noticeable operating cost across a large catalogue or a shop that sells many units from multi-quantity listings. The key is understanding that Etsy can charge the same $0.20 USD listing fee in several different situations: when a listing is first published, when an expired listing is renewed and when another unit sells from a listing that still has stock available.

This guide explains each charge, shows the calculation with practical examples and helps you choose between automatic and manual renewal. To model your own catalogue, use the free Etsy Listing Renewal Cost Calculator.

How much does Etsy charge to renew a listing?

Etsy’s current US-dollar listing fee is $0.20 per listing. A standard Etsy.com listing remains active for four months unless it sells out or is removed. Renewing it starts a new four-month listing period and creates another $0.20 charge.

The basic expiry-renewal calculation is:

Renewal cost = Number of listings renewed × $0.20

For example, renewing 150 expired listings costs:

150 × $0.20 = $30.00

The fee applies whether the renewed listing later sells or not. Etsy states that editing a listing does not create a listing fee, so improving the title, photos, description, price or tags is different from renewing it.

The three listing charges sellers often confuse

1. Initial listing fee

Publishing a new listing on Etsy.com creates a $0.20 charge. Entering a quantity greater than one does not multiply the initial charge immediately. A new listing for one mug and a new listing for ten identical mugs both begin with one $0.20 listing fee.

2. Expiry renewal fee

If a listing reaches the end of its four-month period, renewing it costs another $0.20. With automatic renewal enabled, Etsy renews the listing and charges the fee automatically. With manual renewal selected, the listing expires and waits for the seller to decide whether to renew it.

3. Auto-renew sold or multi-quantity fee

When one unit sells from a listing that still has quantity available, Etsy keeps the listing active for the remaining stock and charges another $0.20. Etsy may show this in the Payment account as an auto-renew sold fee. When several units sell in one transaction, the extra units can appear as a multi-quantity fee.

This charge is triggered by units sold, not by the four-month expiry date. It can therefore occur many times during one listing period.

How quantity changes Etsy renewal fees

Suppose a seller creates one listing with a quantity of ten.

  • Publishing the listing: $0.20
  • First unit sold while nine remain: another $0.20
  • Each additional unit sold from the same quantity: another $0.20
  • Total listing fees after all ten units sell: $2.00

The first $0.20 covered the original listing. The other nine units create $1.80 in additional quantity-related charges as they sell.

A useful sales-based estimate is:

Estimated listing fees for units sold = Units sold × $0.20

This works when each sold unit consumes one quantity from an Etsy listing. It does not include transaction fees, payment-processing fees, advertising fees, currency conversion or other possible charges.

Automatic versus manual renewal

Etsy says new listings are set to automatic renewal by default. Sellers can choose Manual in the renewal options when creating, editing or renewing a listing. The right setting depends on the product rather than on one shop-wide rule.

Renewal settingWhat happens at expiryBest suited toMain risk
AutomaticThe listing renews for another four months and Etsy charges $0.20Proven evergreen products that remain in stockWeak listings may keep renewing without review
ManualThe listing expires until the seller renews itSeasonal, limited, experimental or slow productsA good listing may go offline if the seller forgets

Automatic renewal protects continuity, but it should not replace catalogue management. Manual renewal creates a decision point, but it also needs a reliable review process.

Does renewing improve Etsy search ranking?

Etsy’s renewal help page says renewal gives a listing a new listing date while preserving its original views, favourites and web address. That does not mean paying to renew weak listings repeatedly is a complete search strategy.

Before renewing a low-performing listing, review whether shoppers are finding it and whether visits convert into orders. Improve relevant photos, attributes, pricing, delivery information and copy where the evidence supports a change. The Etsy SEO titles and tags guide can help with listing relevance, while the Listing Title & Tag Optimizer provides a structured starting point.

How to forecast monthly Etsy renewal costs

Separate expiry renewals from quantity-related renewals. They are driven by different activity.

Estimated monthly listing cost = New listings + Expiry renewals + Sold-unit renewals

Convert each component to dollars:

(New listings × $0.20) + (Listings renewed at expiry × $0.20) + (Additional quantities sold × $0.20)

Example for one month:

  • 40 new listings: 40 × $0.20 = $8.00
  • 90 listings renewed after expiry: 90 × $0.20 = $18.00
  • 260 additional quantities sold: 260 × $0.20 = $52.00
  • Estimated listing-related total: $78.00

Etsy denominates listing fees in US dollars and says it converts them to the seller’s Payment account currency at the market rate when the fee is reflected. Therefore, the amount recorded in another currency can vary with exchange rates.

Include renewal fees in product profit

A $0.20 fee may look immaterial beside the sale price, but low-priced items and thin-margin products feel it more strongly. Treat the listing charge as a per-unit marketplace cost when estimating profit.

For a product sold for $4.00, a $0.20 listing fee equals 5% of the selling price before transaction fees, payment processing, advertising, materials, labour or delivery. On a $40 product, the same charge equals 0.5%.

Use the Etsy Fee Calculator for a broader estimate, then compare gross profit with the guidance in gross profit versus net profit. If you advertise, also check Etsy Ads break-even ROAS and the Etsy Offsite Ads fee guide.

When should you avoid automatic renewal?

Consider manual review for listings that are:

  • Seasonal and unlikely to sell during the next four months
  • Outdated or no longer aligned with current inventory
  • Generating visits but no orders
  • Using photos, prices or delivery information that need updating
  • Experiments that have reached a defined test limit
  • Made from supplies you cannot reliably replace

Do not judge only by the $0.20 fee. A poor listing can also consume management time, make a shop harder to maintain and distract from stronger products. Conversely, allowing a proven listing to expire can cost sales far greater than the renewal charge.

A simple renewal review process

  1. Review expiring listings: group them by expiry date so decisions are made before products disappear.
  2. Check sales and visits: separate proven listings, promising listings with weak conversion and listings with little relevant traffic.
  3. Confirm stock and production capacity: use a truthful quantity, especially for made-to-order goods.
  4. Review profit: include listing, transaction, processing, advertising, material, labour and shipping costs.
  5. Choose an action: renew unchanged, improve and renew, switch to manual, deactivate or retire.
  6. Record the decision: avoid paying repeatedly for a listing no one has evaluated.

For listings with several units available, compare quantity with realistic production capacity. Etsy specifically advises sellers of made-to-order items to list only the number they can feasibly create within their production time.

What about Etsy Plus listing credits?

Etsy currently says Etsy Plus includes 15 monthly credits for creating or renewing listings. The credits reset at the beginning of each subscription cycle and do not roll over. Treat them as a reduction in eligible listing charges, not as a reason to keep unprofitable products active.

Frequently asked questions

Does Etsy charge $0.20 every time an item sells?

For a multi-quantity listing, Etsy charges another $0.20 when a sold unit is followed by remaining quantity, keeping the listing available. Selling several units can therefore create listing fees for the additional quantities.

How long does an Etsy listing last?

A standard Etsy.com listing lasts four months unless it sells out or is removed. Renewal begins another four-month period.

Can I stop Etsy listings from renewing automatically?

Yes. Etsy allows sellers to choose Manual instead of Automatic in Renewal Options. A manually managed listing expires at the end of its current period unless the seller renews it.

Is there a fee for editing an Etsy listing?

Etsy’s current policy says there is no listing fee for editing a listing. A fee applies when the listing is created or renewed.

Does a renewed listing lose its favourites and URL?

Etsy says a renewed listing keeps its original view count, favourites and web address while receiving a new listing and expiration date.

Are renewal fees the same as Etsy transaction fees?

No. The $0.20 listing or renewal fee is separate from Etsy’s transaction fee, payment-processing charges, advertising fees and other applicable costs.

Calculate before you renew

The safest approach is not to turn off every automatic renewal or leave every listing on autopilot. Keep proven, in-stock products available; create review points for seasonal and weak listings; and include every $0.20 charge in product-level profit.
